HICKEY Bernard Passed peacefully away on17th July aged 85 years. The much loved husband of Trude and devoted father of the late Gillian, Sarah, Catherine and Roger. A treasured grandad to 10 and great grandad to 4 who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. The funeral will be on Wednesday 2nd August 2.00pm at Oxford Crematorium. Donations if desired to The Woodland Trust. c/o S & R Childs Funeral Services, 69 London Rd, Headington OX3 9AA

I was very sorry to hear of Bernard's passing. He clearly had a wonderfully full life with grandchildren and great-grandchildren to enjoy in his later years. It is almost 50 years since he taught me art at Oxford Grammar School. I had only limited artistic talent but he was always kind and understanding with both me and my class mates. He was certainly a popular teacher, well-liked by all his pupils (and colleagues) - not all teachers achieve that prized status! Bernard was a brilliant artist (of course) and enthusiastic about his subject. I know this because later in my life I was given a water colour painting which my parents had asked him to do of their local village green. This painting is much cherished and hangs amongst others I have collected over the years. Now that I am retired I regularly visit art galleries to enjoy paintings and sculpture and I put this down to Bernard's influence all those years ago. I attach a photograph of his painting in the hope that it will bring some pleasure to his family at this time of loss. My condolences, Richard Shute
