FALLEN soldiers from Oxfordshire will be remembered at a special ceremony in Oxford at the weekend.

The Turning the Pages ceremony will take place on Saturday at the Military Chapel in Christ Church Cathedral off St Aldate’s at 11am.

The ceremonies are held once every two months to remember those who gave their lives in the two World Wars.

The tradition was started by Colonel Richard Hill, a former officer with the Royal Green Jackets, and after he died he passed the responsibility to Colonel Mike Vince MBE.

Names of soldiers are read out and a page from the Book of Remembrance is turned in its glass case. The ceremonies are regularly attended by past and present members of the armed forces, the Royal British Legion and the Oxfordshire Army Cadet Force.

Colonel Mike Vince MBE, is list organiser for the ceremony, which honours soldiers from the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and the Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars.

Colonel Vince is a lifelong member of the Army Cadet Force in Buckinghamshire, which is affiliated to the Rifles. He said: “The ceremony dates back about 20 years and I took over from Colonel Hill when he died.

“Following Saturday’s ceremony we are planning a special event for November to coincide with the Armistice. We would like to take the books out of the military chapel into the main part of the cathedral so that more people can see the ceremony. You can only get about 50 people in the military chapel itself.

“At the moment the names of soldiers read out from the Ox and Bucks are those who died in the First World War.”
