The Armed Forces Day flag will be flown above Oxford Town Hall in support of those serving the country - particularly during the pandemic.

Armed Forces Day is on Saturday and it is an opportunity for the public to show their support for the men and women who serve in our Armed Forces; including the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force, reservists, veterans and cadets.

The day honours the bravery and commitment of service personnel past and present, and this year particularly thanks them for their vital support during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The military were called in early in the pandemic to build the Nightingale hospitals, and military medical personnel have been working in our hospitals delivering front line care.

In Oxford, the Armed Forces supported the testing facility at Thornhill Park and Ride, helped set up the asymptomatic testing facilities in The King’s Centre, and relieved pressure on the local NHS by transporting patients.

The Lord Mayor of Oxford, Councillor Mark Lygo, said: “Armed Forces personnel know that they may be asked to put their lives in danger to protect the country, but being on the frontline of the pandemic has been a very different kind of danger. We are hugely grateful to them for their commitment and service that has helped keep us all safe on a different kind of front line at home.

"We’re proud to fly the Armed Forces Day flag and show our recognition for the whole armed forces community.”
