The Lord Mayor of Oxford visited the Covered Market to support the local traders and businesses ahead of “Independents' Day” on 4th July.

Jaf D'Souza, of Fedele Oxford, which sells leather goods, said: “We had invited the Lord Mayor to support the local shops and independent businesses as we all know that due to pandemic a lot of businesses had to shut down and the bigger brands got stronger.

“We invited the mayor to encourage people to buy local and to make people aware that the historical Covered Market has so much to offer with more than 50 independent traders.”

Mr D’Souza’s other shop on the High Street had to close last year because of the pandemic.

The Lord Mayor, Cllr Mark Lygo, spent more than two hours touring the market and speaking to the traders.

Mr D’Souza said: “He said that if there is anything he can do from his side to support the local businesses he is happy to do that.”

Cllr Lygo also visited Oxford Market Barbers, Colombia Coffee Roasters and the Sofi de France café.
