A teenager caught with ‘a couple of spliffs’ worth’ of cannabis was giving a ticking off by an Oxford judge.
Dylan Clements, 18, was subject to a crown court conditional discharge for cannabis possession when he was caught in Banbury on March 6 with the cigarette packet containing the class B drug.
Prosecutor Scott Forman told Oxford Crown Court that Clements was one of three men stopped on Dukes Meadow Drive. The defendant immediately admitted to having the cannabis and handed it over.
Judge Nigel Daly said: “What’s silly about this case is that he’s given a conditional discharge on November 24 for being in possession of cannabis and here we are three-and-a-half months later and he’s in possession of cannabis again.”
Mitigating, Gareth James said it was sad that in March his client had not yet been able to give up the drug. He had been caught with ‘enough to roll one or two spliffs’.
Since his arrest he had kicked the habit. “He’s a young man and he accepts fully he has made a mistake,” the advocate said.
Clements, of Ferriston, Banbury, pleaded guilty at the magistrates’ court to possession of cannabis and breach of a conditional discharge. He lived at home and was reliant on his parents for money.
Fining him £300, Judge Daly said: “If you’re not in employment it’s about time you applied for benefits and stopped living off your parents.”
