MEMBERS of the Mexican community in Oxford came together on Sunday night to celebrate the Day of the Dead.

A communal altar was set up at The Sanctuary in St Hilda's College, Cowley Place, to honour and remember family members that have passed away and to share the tradition with others.

The festivities were organised by university student Maira Loyo, treasurer of Oxford Mexican Society. She said the occasion is about family and forming strong connections.

PhD student Miguel Moctezuma, committee president of Oxford Mexican Society, said: “Even though we are a small community, we don’t have to be many to organise events like this.

“Many people now are more familiar with this celebration because of the [Disney] film Coco, so this is a great opportunity for them to explore this tradition.”

He added: “I think this was a perfect opportunity, for us as students, to put something together to give and explanation a go deeper with the community in Oxford.”

Last year, the Day of the Dead celebrations did not go ahead due to the pandemic.
