We asked Oxford Mail readers on Facebook what they would recommend someone did if they were in Oxford for one night.

And you said LEAVE…

The answers reflected discontent that has been growing in the city in recent months over Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs).

Anti-LTN protestors descended on Oxford on Saturday February 18 to protest the scheme designed to lower traffic levels in highly populated areas.

The LTN bollards in east Oxford have been repeatedly vandalised with some removed since the scheme was first introduced last summer.

Lee Wilkins commented on the article: “Try have a drive around to see the sights: LTNs, empty shops and pubs where people used to have fun.

"Try and dodge the potholes the council never fix, ask the locals what it used to be like when it was a great town to visit, and make sure they bring plenty of money!”

“Get them to drive round all day, so they can feel our pain of living in Oxford[,] lol,” David Brennan added.

Others took a more straightforward line.

Reg Roberts simply commented: “Leave as quick as possible.”

And Andrew Cooper wrote: “Get the first bus out again.”

A common theme was encouraging tourists to visit neighbouring towns and cities instead.

Paul Troth said: “Go to Reading!”

Milton Keynes also featured as a suggestion for an alternative trip.

Traffic was a common complaint among the commenters about why Oxford is no longer a recommended place to visit.

Louise Coldrick wrote: “Get an early night so you can get on the road early and be home at a decent hour.”

Sharon Barney added: “You can’t get into Oxford anymore due to traffic and LTNS!!

“Go to Reading on the train much quicker and cheaper.”

But some of our readers took a more positive line, encouraging tourists to visit the wealth of historical sites that Oxford has to offer.

Kate Bailey contributed: “Wander the streets looking at the beautiful buildings and hopefully catch a sunset over the spires…”

Whereas Shadé Clifford commented: “I grew up in Oxford and I'm so sad that the first thing people think to comment when asked a question like this is 'Leave'.

“I love Oxford, it's beautiful.

“I have children now and we go to Cutteslowe Park all the time.

“I used to go for walks around South Parks too when I lived there and look out at the spires of Oxford."
