A pub in Wantage has won two prestigious awards just several months after it was taken over by new owners.

The Kings Arms in Wallingford Street was named by the Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) as the best pub in the Vale of White Horse, and also won cider pub of the year.

Landlord Simon Moore, 48, said he was “gobsmacked” when he found out the news.

He said: “I only took over her last October but I have run CAMRA award winning pubs in the past but it’s nice to have that recognition.

“We’re really proud about our ales and ciders and we have a constantly changing range on offer.

“I was a bit gobsmacked when the guys came in and told me that we won. It’s nice to be appreciated for doing what we do. We serve good beer and good cider.”

The pub, which is owned by Oak Taverns brewery, changes its beer line-up frequently, and often has six real ales, three craft beers and six real ciders on offer.

Mr Moore said: “We’re changing all the time and we update people on our website about what ales we have at the moment.

“It’s great to have the variety. These chain pubs wouldn’t bring this stuff in as its brewed in small batches.

“We have the standard stuff for the old boys, but it’s the stuff like this you don’t see at every pub.”
