Voters are being urged to register ahead of this summer's general election, with the deadline set for Tuesday next week.

There are only a few days remaining, with registration closing at 11.59pm on June 18.

Registration for postal and proxy votes have their own deadlines of 5pm on June 19 and 26 respectively.

Director of electoral administration at the Electoral Commission, Jackie Killeen, said: "A general election is an important opportunity for people to express their views, and registering is the first step to the ballot box.

"It’s quick and simple to apply, and with only days until the deadline, time is of the essence.

"All voters must be registered before midnight on 18 June to take part, and those that plan to vote at a polling station need to check that they have an accepted form of ID in order to get their ballot paper.

"Complete those two tasks and you’ll be ready to cast your vote.”

Since the election was announced, almost 1.5 million people have registered to vote, a process that takes five minutes and can be completed online.

Eligible voters must be at least 18 years old on polling day, and a British, Irish or qualifying Commonwealth citizen.

The Electoral Commission's 2022 research revealed that nearly eight million UK residents were not correctly registered.

Young people, private renters and recent movers are among those less likely to be correctly registered.
