A SENIOR aircraftman is on trial accused of sexually assaulting a woman after a night out in Witney.

Joseph Tuitoga, of RAF Brize Norton, near Carterton, is on trial at Oxford Crown Court charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of assault by penetration.

The 28-year-old is accused of sexually assaulting a woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, on August 9, 2022 in Witney town centre after meeting her in a snooker bar.

However, Tuitoga has denied the offences and is now standing trial.

During the trial opening on Monday (June 24), barrister Peter Finnigan said that Tuitoga had been out drinking with a group of friends who also work at RAF Brize Norton.

He said that the group of men and the complainant’s friends had been getting along ‘quite well’ at first by then she described Tuitoga as making ‘vulgar’ and ‘sexualised’ comments towards her.

Tuitoga had allegedly tried to kiss her but she had leaned away.

Mr Finnigan said she had become ‘uncomfortable’ with the way he was behaving towards.

When the group left the bar, the woman describes being ‘suddenly and unexpectedly swept off her feet’ by the defendant.

Mr Finnigan said: “Her first reaction was of surprise…but she was nervous as you can imagine and straight away felt uncomfortable, especially when she realised who it was.

“She wanted to break free and said, ‘No, I don’t like this’.

"Well, the defendant, who it seems had been drinking throughout the day and in the evening, ignored her wishes and bite her over her clothing on her breast.

“She tried to stop him but he didn’t stop and she told him to ‘f*** off’ but he was determined it seems to continue with his behaviour.”

It is alleged that Tuitoga then assaulted the woman further.

“There was absolutely no doubt in [the woman’s] mind that what he had done was deliberate,” said the prosecution.

“It was a course of conduct that started in the club and continued outside.”

Mr Finnigan explained to the jury that they will be shown CCTV from inside the snooker bar and some from when they left but that the alleged incident had not been caught as it was in a ‘blind spot’.

The jury heard that the complainant, accompanied by her father, then attended RAF Brize Norton the following day to make a complaint.

She was advised to make a report to the police which she did a few days later.

Tuitoga has denied the offences and the trial continues.
