A team of rowers from an Oxford school have won the final of a prestigious competition after defeating national champions from the USA and Australia earlier in the campaign.

The girls from Headington School triumphed in the Prince Philip Challenge Trophy, cheered on by their friends, family and alumnae on the River Thames.

It is the second time since the competition began in 2021 that the Headington first eight have secured victory.

Headington is the only British team to hold the trophy, with American and Australian teams winning the event in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

The team faced American opposition in the final on July 7, having qualified by winning the Henley Women’s Regatta two weeks earlier.

Headmistress Caroline Jordan said: "It was absolutely amazing to see our Championship Eight winning at Henley Royal, beating the Australian and US champions along the way.

"The support from the wider Headington School Oxford Boat Club family was truly humbling. Well done, Headington."

The win marks the beginning of a summer of celebration, with multiple members awaiting exam results and others preparing for trials with the England and Great Britain teams.

Ryan Demaine, Headington performance director and head coach, said the victory was "monumental".

He added: "Our advantage truly shines with the full support of a school like Headington".

He said staff and governors "create the best possible athlete-scholar environment for these girls to excel both academically and in sport”.
