A city centre street will close to allow for repair of its "dreadful" surface.

Queen Street in Oxford is set to shut overnight from July 22 to July 27 between 8pm and 6am.

This is to allow for resurfacing on the road, which stretches 1.32 kilometres.

A diversion route will be in place for public transport that normally utilises the route.

Queen Street is a pedestrianised street which hosts the Westgate shopping centre - it is two-way for cyclists outside main shopping hours and is forbidden for cars.

The works are part of council plans to spend approximately £600,000 repairing both Cornmarket Street and Queen Street in the city centre.

Susanna Pressel, a county councillor for the Jericho and Osney division, said the road surfaces in Queen Street and Cornmarket Street have been "in a truly dreadful state for many months".
