An Oxford Muslim leader has spoken out following a heated debate with a Reform UK MP who he says was "not balanced" and "aggressive".

Dr Sheikh Ramzy, from the Oxford Islamic Information Centre, appeared on GB News on Tuesday with Lee Anderson, who represents Ashfield, where they discussed the riots sweeping across the country.

The debate followed anti-immigration and anti-Muslim protests following the murder of three young girls in Southport by Axel Rudakubana, 17, a “quiet choir boy” with a family heavily involved in the local church - the Mirror reports - who was born in the UK.

In a spat aired on Tuesday, Mr Anderson grew frustrated with Dr Ramzy after the latter suggested he and other Reform leaders could help put an end to the riots.

The MP himself said the Muslim community must do more to speak out against "Islamists", while acknowledging “99 per cent” of the religion’s community is peaceful.

Speaking to us after the exchange, Dr Ramzy said: "Why are you (Mr Anderson) cutting off and insulting me?

"The man is not balanced.

"He was aggressive and in a riot mood.

"He was losing the debate and wanted to cut it off.

"It's totally wrong of him as a member of parliament to speak like that and lose his temper.

"I respect Reform but of course Reform is behind these riots - they can stop it."

Dr Ramzy went on to say he thought the "root cause" of the riots was immigration and the government being "too lenient".

He added: "Why are Muslims only taking the blame?

"They have been used as a scapegoat.

"This can be solved with very level headed people and a polite manner.

"Muslims should not be attacked – let them do their work and job. They are one of strongest elements of the country going forward."

Dr Ramzy said people in Oxford from the Muslim community had contacted him saying they were scared and added people had regularly come up to him in the city and started "swearing".

He said: "It is common because they have been encouraged.

"This is totally wrong.

"We have to be united.

"People from Reform have also contacted me in tears saying they know it's not Muslims fault - they phoned three times this morning."

An army of 6,000 riot officers is on standby to intervene and protect 39 targeted locations, as well as detectives from regional crime units who are monitoring the ringleaders.

There are reports that an anti-immigration and anti-Muslim protest is planned for Oxford this evening.
