It has been suggested that Emma Raducanu could become a part-time tennis player amid links to the University of Oxford.

The 21-year-old has had a mixed summer after being knocked out in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon as she decided to skip the Olympics in Paris.

Raducanu then decided to travel over to Washington to compete in the WTA 500 but once again lost in the last eight stage.

She had also planned to compete at the Cincinnati Open next to prepare for the US Open later this month but saw her wildcard rejected.

Her status as a former Grand Slam champion does push her wildcard claim but she was also overlooked by the tournament committee overseeing the W1000 event in Toronto.

A recent report in Tennis365 said: “All players have to play at a level they may feel is below them if they are on the way back from an injury lay-off, but Raducanu doesn’t appear to be willing to do that at the moment and that decision means she will have very little match practice on American hard courts ahead of the US Open.

“Unless she has a deep run and improves her ranking substantially at the US Open, it seems she will be relying on wildcards to get into the top-tier tournaments she wants to play in.

“Her apparent refusal to play in qualifying events is a gamble that has already backfired as she is currently on the sidelines while the tennis world continues in her absence.

“So she will arrive at the US Open later this month with very few matches under her belt and hoping to find her form in the heat of a Grand Slam tournament once again.”

The suggestion of Raducanu being a part-time tennis player was then suggested due to her issue with wildcard events.

“Becoming a part-time tennis player who only plays in events where wildcards are offered is not a viable long-term approach for Raducanu and the tennis world may leave her behind unless she begins to play more tournaments,” added the article.

Should the 21-year-old move away from the professional sporting world, her next destination could very well be Oxford.

Ahead of Wimbledon this year, Raducanu visited the city for an outing and was then linked with the University of Oxford.

She played down the rumours of potentially studying at the historic educational institution but refused to rule out the idea completely.

“I’m very much focused on my professional tennis career,” she said in the post-match press conference.

“Once that’s over maybe or once I have more disposition or more time, that’s for sure something I would love to explore.

“For now I’m very much focused on the tennis.”
