People living in a city neighbourhood have raised concerns for their safety after gunshots were fired on their street.

Two separate reports of gunshots are being investigated by police and are believed to be “connected and targeted”.

The firearm incidents happened at two separate properties in the Oxford area, just a 10-minute drive apart on Sunday and then the early hours of Monday.

Officers were first called to a report of a gunshot outside a property in Weymann Terrace in the Cowley area on Sunday, August 11 at around 4.30pm.

Nobody was inside the property at the time and there were no injuries, say police who placed a cordon outside the front of the property in Saunders Road.

Nine hours later officers were then called to a block of flats at Warren Crescent in Headington following another report of a gunshot at around 1.30am on Monday, August 12.

Officers have confirmed there was nobody inside the flat at the time of the incident.

No arrests have been made and cordons were in place at both properties but this has now been lifted with police saying there is "no threat to the wider public".

However, residents have expressed their concerns about their safety this morning (Tuesday, July 13).

One resident, who lives in Saunders Road and asked to remain anonymous said: “It is the first time I have seen something like this happen on the street.

“I was very surprised. It’s normally very peaceful. Everyone I see around looks peaceful.

“At this moment, I don’t even know what transpired.

“It is a worry because of the suspects and not knowing what exactly happened.

“When the police spoke to my wife they only asked if they heard any noise and not why they were here.

“Maybe that would have calmed us down because we started wondering if we are living close to criminals.

“Did they come to murder somewhere here? Are we safe? Those are the concerns.”

Shakeel Ahmed, aged 30 who also lives in Saunders Road, said: “In all honesty, it is a big concern.

"As people living on this street, we don’t actually know what happened or what was going on.

“We just saw lots of police with dogs and vans hauling up the street, so it is definitely concerning.

“It is definitely a rare instance. That much policing around here and the way they came quite aggressively is quite concerning, especially with what’s happening at the moment.

“There was a lot of police. They have been around the last two days. There were more than 10 police cars on here the other day.

“There are a lot of little kids running around this area too so it is definitely a concern.”

Another resident on the street, who asked to remain anonymous too, said: “Obviously it is a concern if there are firearms involved. It is not the sort of thing you want to happen in your neighbourhood.”

Laurie Wilkinson, who lives in Warren Crescent, said: “I have been here for three years and it is the first time anything like this has happened.

“It is very worrying. It is a very residential area so it is not what you want to see. I wouldn’t expect it as it is a very quiet area normally.”

A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said: "If anyone witnessed anything or has information, they should report it online or call 101, quoting 43240384658 for the incident at Weymann Terrace and 43240385272 for the incident at Warren Crescent.”
