An accessible boat club is set to surpass last year's record for the number of passengers it has carried in a single year by the end of the 2024 season.

Wallingford Accessible Boat Club, a charity that assists disabled and less mobile people to get out on the River Thames, has seen a sharp rise in the number of passengers it is carrying since extending its service to run five days a week.

With more than a month to go before the end of the wheelyboat season, the numbers for this year have already matched the previous season of 65 river trips carrying 252 passengers.

The club's chairman, John Jenkins, said: "We are all really excited about the popularity of our wheelyboat service.

"It is so very pleasing that so many disabled and elderly people in our area are taking advantage of the free-of-charge service we offer."

The increase in demand follows a promotional campaign targeting Oxfordshire's healthcare professionals which was run last winter.

Mr Jenkins added: "What’s more, the increased capacity enabled by our five day per week service, announced in early June, enables us to cope with the demand - thanks to our brilliant team of trained volunteers.

“I urge all disabled and less mobile people in South Oxfordshire to take full advantage of our service - come and have some fun on the river."
