A town centre coffee shop has been handed a new three-out-of-five food hygiene rating.

Throwing Buns, which is based in Abingdon's Market Place, was given the score after assessment on July 29, the Food Standards Agency's website shows.

This means that food hygiene standards are deemed to be 'generally satisfactory' at the establishment.

A statement on the Throwing Buns website says: "Celebrating Abingdon’s unique and longstanding tradition of throwing fruit buns from the magnificent County Hall, we offer somewhere homely to enjoy freshly ground wood-roasted coffee, loose teas, delicious lunches and mouth-watering handmade cakes."

The business sought to provide a delivery service while the cafe was closed during the Covid lockdown period.

A statement at the time said the owners were "incredibly grateful for the continued support of our customers and friends".

The latest food hygiene rating means that of the Vale of White Horse's 192 restaurants, cafes and canteens with ratings, 128 (67 per cent) have ratings of five and none have zero ratings.

The Food Standards Agency website says: "Ratings are a snapshot of the standards of food hygiene found at the time of inspection. It is the responsibility of the business to comply with food hygiene law at all times."

The hygiene standards are ranked from zero at the bottom of the scale to five at the top.
