Here we are featuring some nostalgic  photos of Oxford Ice Rink as it reaches its 40th anniversary.

Pioneering campaigner Mary Meagher launched the bid to get the rink built when she arrived in Oxford from the United States in 1979.

Mrs Meagher kept a pile of scrapbooks documenting the successful campaign, and a copy of the original plans for the rink, which opened in November 1984.

Mrs Meagher said: “We had to fight off some opposition to the scheme — Robert Maxwell wanted to build a new ground for Oxford United on the same site but we fought him off and I managed to outlive him too.

“We managed to raise about £130,000 towards the total cost of the rink.

“We had some great support from city councillors at the time, including Barbara Gatehouse.”
