A dead body has been found on the grounds of an Oxfordshire country pub leading to a huge emergency response.

Thames Valley Police officers were called to The Maybush pub on Abingdon Road in Newbridge near Witney on Friday, September 27 at around 8.46am.

This followed reports of an incident at the location and a body of a man in his sixties was found close to the watering hole.

The victim has been confirmed to have been in his 60s and the force do not believe the death to be suspicious but rather “unexplained”.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Tragically, the body of a man aged in his sixties was located nearby.

“The man's death is being treated as unexplained, but not suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the Coroner.

“His next of kin have been made aware and our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time.”

The pub was closed on Friday by officers as a result of the incident with a large volume of emergency service vehicles seen at the location.

“One eyewitness said: “I went past this morning [Friday] and saw a hell of a lot of emergency service vehicles."

Customers were informed by the watering hole that it would be closed throughout Friday as the management team apologised to its locals.

On Friday, a spokesperson for The Maybush pub said: “We are truly sorry, but due to an ongoing incident, the pub is closed today.”

The drinking spot reopened on Saturday and staff confirmed on Sunday that Thames Valley Police had been at the site but did not reveal the reason why.

A spokesperson for The Maybush pub told the Oxford Mail: “We aren’t closed anymore as we were shut for just one day.

“It was nothing to do with the floods, it was something else but we reopened on Saturday.

“There were police at the pub.”

The pub is described by staff as being "a beautiful dog-friendly pub nestled on the banks of the River Thames".
