The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for heavy rain and possible flooding across Oxfordshire today.

This comes after days of rain last week which led to severe flooding across the county

Drivers are being encouraged to plan ahead with rain forecast from this morning until the evening.

Also, five flood warnings and 24 flood alerts have been issued today.

A flood alert indicates that an area should prepare, including making defences and staying up to date with the latest information.

When a flood warning is issued, this indicates a greater level of severity.

On Sunday, September 22 and Monday, September 23 the county was hit with more than a month’s worth of rainfall in the space of 36 hours.

Oxford University’s Radcliffe Meteorological Observatory reported that Oxford had more rain than in any defined 24-hour period since 1968.

Between 5pm and 6pm on Sunday (September 23) more than 20mm of rain was recorded at the Environment Agency’s Grimsbury Gauge.

On the Met Office website, it encourages people to take extra care when travelling. It said: “A good rule of thumb is ‘if it’s time for your wipers, it’s time to slow down’.

“If heavy downpours are expected, avoid starting your journey until it clears.

“If you can, choose main roads, where you are less likely to be exposed to fallen branches and debris and flooding.”
