An Oxfordshire road is set to close temporarily this month for works to install a new toucan pedestrian crossing.

Howes Lane in Bicester will be closed to all motor vehicles from 7pm until 11pm on Tuesday, October 22, and it is anticipated to be closed until Friday, October 25.

Suggested alternative routes are the B4030, A41, A4421, and A4095.

Oxfordshire County Council said the closure will be in place to "facilitate plane existing carriageway, resurface and white line to facilitate the new toucan pedestrian crossing".

The chair of campaign group, Derwent Green Residents Group, previously urged the cabinet member for transport management Andrew Gant to stop a "ludicrous waste of money" being spent on the new crossing.

The campaign group comprises of over 70 adults living on the Greenwood Homes estate in Bicester and has been campaigning for years over the realignment of Howes Lane.

Despite the toucan crossing being met with controversy, Oxfordshire County Council previously said the crossing will provide many benefits, including "providing safe access for pedestrians and cyclists".

"The crossing will form a key link to an employment site that is already being built, providing safe access for pedestrians and cyclists travelling from Bicester town centre and elsewhere until the existing Howes Lane is realigned to the new developments.

“Oxfordshire County Council is committed to delivering a strategic link road across the planned North West Bicester development, which includes the realigned Howes Lane."
