A driver required hospital treatment after being assaulted by a group of men impersonating police in a robbery on a motorway used by Oxfordshire motorists.

The incident happened on Sunday (October 20) at approximately 9.15pm, in which the victim, a man in his 30s, was driving along the M40 southbound across the border from Oxfordshire.

He was travelling between High Wycombe and Beaconsfield when another car collided with him causing minor damage.

Another vehicle displayed blue lights and instructed the victim to pull over, police said in a statement on Friday afternoon. 

Police say the victim then pulled off at junction two of the M40 and pulled into the layby on the A355 between the M40 roundabout and the Pyebush Roundabout.

Police say a group of men then got out of the car, grabbed the victim out of his car and assaulted him, causing grievous bodily harm.

They also stole his phone, wallet and keys.

The victim sustained a broken jaw and broken eye socket, and hospital treatment was required. He has since been discharged.

The men are believed to have arrived in a red Nissan and a dark coloured Volvo.

Investigating officer, PC Mollie Dugmore, based at Aylesbury police station, said: “Impersonating a police officer is an offence that we will not tolerate, and we are appealing for information following this incident.

“We are asking anyone with information to please call 101 quoting the reference 43240506514.

“Additionally we ask anyone with mobile phone, CCTV or dash-cam footage from the M40 or the surrounding areas at around 9.10pm to get in touch with the force in case it has captured something which may assist this investigation.
