A man from Bicester celebrated a win at a Jiu-Jitsu fight last weekend.

Alex Davidson, aged 22, won the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) fight at Grapplewars in Llandudno Wales on Saturday, October 26.

He won by triangle in under one minute 30 seconds, out of what could've been an eight minute fight.

Mr Davidson, who trains at a local BJJ gym called Inspire, is coached by David Plested, a third degree jiu-jitsu black belt.

The 22-year-old has been involved in the sport for around eight years and started karate when he was just four years old.

He has competed consistently in jiu-jitsu since 2021.

"It felt amazing to win," said Mr Davidson.

"Not just because of the victory itself but because I executed the exact strategy I had planned in a high-pressure environment.

"I managed to finish the fight quickly and was able to stick to my plan, which made the win feel even more rewarding."

Speaking on the support from his coach and his team, Mr Davidson said: "My coach has been incredible.

"Not only has he helped me develop the technical skills needed to compete at this level in jiu-jitsu, but he's also been instrumental in building my confidence and keeping my mindset strong. Thanks to him, I went into this match feeling composed rather than nervous, which made all the difference.

"The support from my team has also been overwhelming – with just two of us competing from the club, over ten people made the four-hour journey to Llandudno to cheer us on.

"It’s a level of community support I've never experienced before."

He described training for the match as "intense".

"I started a new job at NF Supplements in Kidlington the same week," he said.

"Balancing both created some additional stress, but I kept up the training intensity.

"I also competed in a smaller competition the week before this fight, where I won a gold medal, which boosted my confidence.

"My team and I worked closely on strategy, focusing on technique and injury prevention before the big fight in Wales."

BJJ is a self-defence martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds.

Inspire is a jiu-jitsu gym based just outside Bure Park in Bicester.

The purpose-built facility was established in 2019 with a strong focus on community.

Mr Davidson said: "It’s filled with an incredible group of people, and the head coach, David, is outstanding. He teaches both kids’ and adults’ classes, fostering a supportive environment that’s helped me and so many others grow in the sport."
