Oxford's Christmas market is about to take over Broad Street in the city centre.

Traders and visitors criticised the flat atmosphere and low footfall at last year’s festive market in Broad Street.

Organisers said the three-week event was hampered by the county council's refusal to temporarily close a cycle lane that runs through the pedestrianised street.

A city council spokesman said: "The cycle lane is staying exactly as it is without any change to layout. The event spaces will have a different layout but in the same actual footprint as last year."

The market will run from Saturday until January 5.

This year, Keston Events has taken over the running of the market from LSD Promotions and the city council has approved planning permission for 32 craft stalls and six food stalls.

There will also be a two-storey lodge bar, rides and attractions, a music stage for local performers, and toilets.

"Savour mouth-watering street food, find the perfect gift or simply soak in the festive atmosphere.

"And when you need a break, head over to the cosy Alpine Lodge, our two-storey bar where you can warm up with a seasonal drink."

It adds: "Stroll through our festive market on Broad Street, where you’ll find unique gifts, artisanal crafts, and delicious seasonal treats.

"Enjoy traditional carols sung by local choirs, along with a dynamic mix of pop, rock, and other genres brought to life by talented singers and musicians from across the country."

At the centre of the market there will be a big wheel and a carousel.

Shoppers enjoyed a Victorian Christmas market in Broad Street this month - a much smaller event.

But she quit last year when the county council insisted the cycle lane remain open.

In 2022, a diversion route encouraged cyclists to pass through Cornmarket Street and Queen Street instead when the market was on.

Ms Rahimi said last year: “I’m devastated for all the traders, charities, and local businesses.

“This marks the end of my business, which existed to put on this festive market every year."

In 2022, parking spaces in Broad Street were removed by the county council and planters and seats were positioned throughout the street.

It followed the success of a previous pedestrianisation scheme which was called Broad Meadow.

The county council has been asked to comment.
