Residents are invited to an annual community Christmas Day lunch.

Organised by St Mary and St Nicholas Church, the traditional meal will take place at John Henry Newman Academy from 1pm to 4pm.

Rev Margreet Armitstead, vicar of the church, said: "The event is open to absolutely anyone, as long as they book ahead so we know how many to cater for.

"It is a big friendly gathering; people coming together to share a meal and enjoy each other’s company.

"Christmas can be a highly pressured time of year but people have such good memories of the lunch that they come back year after year."

The church provides a chance for families to enjoy Christmas without the financial burden, with some of the food donated and efforts made to match attendees with drivers for transport.

The lunch is not only for those who are alone but for anyone wanting to join in.

The church is asking for a voluntary contribution of £2.50 per adult and £1.50 per child.

Everyone will enjoy a traditional Christmas meal alongside activities such as bingo and a raffle.

The event, which has become a cherished tradition for many, is run entirely by volunteers.

Rev Armitstead emphasised the importance of the gathering in creating lasting memories and transforming Christmas Day for many residents.

Booking is essential to ensure adequate catering arrangements.
