A road has been closed due to flooding with houses being affected as police declare a "major incident". 

Hailey Road through to Crawley Road in Witney has been shut as Storm Bert continues to cause chaos across Oxfordshire and large parts of the UK. 

People are being urged to avoid the area as the road is described as being unpassable.

A Thames Valley Police statement says: "Houses have been affected, the road is not passable and currently road closures are being put in place.

"There will be other services involved such as the fire service and the local authority, who will action their trigger plan for such an event.

"Please avoid the area to allow all services to operate fully so that it can be dealt with accordingly.

"We are experiencing a good number of calls in relation to flooded roads. Please, if you have to travel, plan your journey and allow extra time."

A flood warning is is in place for Shill Brook at Carterton and Bampton meaning property flooding is expected.

Thames Valley Police (TVP) has said it is aware of "a number of roads flooding in Oxfordshire" this evening.

A statement from TVP South Oxon and Vale of White Horse said: "We're aware that a number of roads are flooding in Oxfordshire.

"We have received a number of reports of flooding across Cherwell and West Oxfordshire and South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse.

"Please take extra care while driving into standing water and adjust your speeds according to the conditions.

"Please also ensure where you are approaching standing water that you check the depth of this water before attempting to pass through it."

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has said it is receiving a number of calls about people being stuck in flood waters. 

A statement issued this evening said: "We are experiencing very high levels of calls for people in vehicles who are stuck in flood waters and properties flooding.

"Most of our crews are out working hard to assist those in most need prioritising life risk calls.

"Now is the time to take action if you are potentially facing flooding. We urge you to not travel unless it is absolutely essential."

It comes after two bad accidents were reported on the roads in West Oxfordshire this afternoon. 

The first took place on the Brize Norton road to Minster, near Witney, in which a car came off the road. 

The second was on Burford High Street where a car collided with the bridge.

Police reported both incidents at 4.15pm as motorists were urged to avoid the area. 

The force said the accidents were caused by Storm Bert creating tough driving conditions.
