Homeowners in Oxford are worried that properties could be damaged as water continues to rise during the floods.

Storm Bert has had a major impact across Oxfordshire in the past couple of days with schools cancelled, trains delayed and several roads flooded.

People living near Botley Road are among those fearing for their properties as nearby fields and towpaths in the city become deluged.

Athanasios Liapis, who lives in Bullstake Close, is in a flash flood zone directly off Botley Road leading to a field which has flooded.

Noticing the rapidly rising water levels, the council implemented a line of sandbags close to the 36-year-old’s property.

Despite this protection, Mr Liapis fears the worst and is even considering fleeing his home for the time being.

“The water has not yet come to our house but it is definitely rising so I need to consider what I am doing today and the evening," he said.

“We may move somewhere else for a couple of days.

“I am very worried about our property as I don’t know when the water is going to stop.”

He has lived in the location for nine months and has never been affected by flooding in the area.

“There was no flooding before today (Tuesday, November 26) but we have now had flash floods following the storm,” added Mr Liapis.

“Three days after the storm it is arriving here and I received an email saying that it is going to be worse than this year’s January.”

It comes as the Seacourt Park and Ride extension has been closed off Botley Road.

Oxford City Council stated the Bulstake Close flood barrier is in position with a pump on stand-by.

Elsewhere in the county roads such as the A40 near Eynsham and Cassington have been left flooded as well as the A4095 near Bladon.

Shops were also hit by the severe weather conditions with several businesses forced to shut including the Tesco superstore on Marcham Road in Abingdon.

Flood warnings were also issued by Oxford City Council as river levels across the city continued to rise throughout Tuesday.

One of the two flood warnings is for the River Thames and tributaries at New Botley, New Hinksey, North Hinksey, South Hinksey and Grandpont, while the other is for the River Cherwell.

A city council spokesperson said: “River levels are high and rising due to water moving from upstream areas, compounded by the effects of heavy rainfall from Storm Bert.

“Rainfall of up to 20mm is forecast to continue into Wednesday morning, with rivers expected to react to the additional water.”

A warning to drivers was issued by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service that said: “Recent heavy rainfall has left many roads under water.

“Never attempt to drive through flood water.

“A foot of moving water at 6mph is enough to float a car - your car could become stranded & require rescuing or worse be swept away, putting yours and others' lives at risk.

“If the road is closed, it's closed for a reason.

“Do not drive through closed roads - they are closed for the safety of all road users and to protect properties from further damage.”
