Six footpaths have been closed across Oxford as rising water levels continue to flood the city.

The effects of Storm Bert are still being felt around the county as rivers rise and roads have been left flooded.

Alongside shops closing and transport services being delayed, several footpaths have also been closed in Oxford for the safety of pedestrians.

As of 3.30pm on Tuesday, November 26, six paths were shut by Oxford City Council including Marston Cyclepath, Willow Walk and the towpath from Fiddler's Island to Botley Road.

Also included is the towpath from Osney Lock to Grandpont, the towpath from Folly Bridge to Donnington Bridge and the towpath from Donnington Bridge to Eastern Bypass.

A spokesperson for Oxford City Council said: “It is extremely dangerous to attempt to walk or cycle along flooded towpaths.

“This has led to loss of life in the past.”

This comes after two flood warnings were issued for Oxford on Tuesday as river levels across the city continued to rise.

One of the two flood warnings is for the River Thames and tributaries at New Botley, New Hinksey, North Hinksey, South Hinksey and Grandpont, while the other is for the River Cherwell.

A city council spokesperson said: “River levels are high and rising due to water moving from upstream areas, compounded by the effects of heavy rainfall from Storm Bert.

“Rainfall of up to 20mm is forecast to continue into Wednesday morning, with rivers expected to react to the additional water.”
