Abingdon's Tesco Extra store has reopened following flooding caused by Storm Bert.

The store off Marcham Road shut on Monday afternoon after heavy rainfall at the weekend caused the River Ock to burst its banks.

Staff reopened to customers this morning about 6am and cleaning lorries have now been brought in to clear mud from the car park.

Click and collect services are up and running again, operating from the front of the store.

The supermarket giant has lost two and a half days' of trading due to the latest floods but it is not the first time it has been forced to close due to flooding.

The store was also forced to shut in April last year, and in January and September - each time the car park has flooded, as the store was built on a flood plain.

A member of staff estimated earlier that the store has lost hundreds of thousands of pounds in the past two years as a result of the closures.

The water level in the River Ock fell overnight and is now just above the normal range.

Residents in South Abingdon have also been affected by the flooding.

People living in Chaunterell Way and surrounding streets were flooded for the third time in a year this week.

Barriers once tested by the Environment Agency in fields behind their homes, designed to prevent flood water reaching the houses, have been removed and there is no existing flood plan for the town.

Oxford West and Abingdon MP Layla Moran is urging the Government to adjust funding formulas so that towns as well as cities get funding for flood protection.
